This may be due to alcohol sales being designated as an “essential service”, and existing restrictions on home delivery and carryout have been loosened. In fact, in North America, early signs indicate that consumption and sales have recently increased in this part of the world. Heavy drinking may increase during such times. There are a number of risk factors for suicide that can become more prevalent during a pandemic, one of particular importance being heavy drinking. Shannon Lange PhD1*, Michael Roerecke PhD1, & Jürgen Rehm PhD1ġInstitute for Mental Health Policy Research, Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, Toronto ON, CanadaĪs Reger and colleagues accurately point out, an epidemic, and in the case of the coronavirus disease 2019 a pandemic, does not directly lead to suicide mortality, but rather, it creates a situation in which the potential for suicide is high. Our trio of heroines is determined not to sit idly by while these horrors consume everyone around them. Griffith’s celebrated film is planned at Stone Mountain. Here, Simmons and his faction of newly-empowered Klansmen conducted a ritual that ushered in the Second Age of the Ku Klux Klan.įast-forward to 1922, a re-release of D.W. William Joseph Simmons, a preacher, fraternal society organizer, and “regular old witch,” was inspired by the film to coordinate a gathering at Stone Mountain, about thirty miles east of Atlanta. In 1915, The Birth of a Nation reinvigorated what was, at the time, a dying white supremacy movement. Hard to tell who won the war and who lost. The Klans died out, but the evil they loosed lived on - whipping and killing colored people for voting, driving them from government, whole massacres that established this Jim Crow what still choking us now. It was freed people that helped end that first Klan - Robert Smalls and his band. I read Ring Shout for Prompt #24 of my 2022 Reading Challenge: A book you can read in one sitting. From the author of Printz Medal winner Bone Gap comes the unforgettable story of two young women-one living, one dead-dealing with loss, desire, and the fragility of the American dream during WWII. ‘”If you run out of ideas follow the road you will get there””‘ ‘“Men have called me mad but the question is not yet settled, whether madness is or is not the loftiest intelligence– whether much that is glorious– whether all that is profound– does not spring from disease of thought– from moods of mind exalted at the expense of the general intellect.” - Eleonora’ ‘”False hope is nicer than no hope at all.”‘ ‘“There are some secrets which do not permit themselves to be told.” -The man of the crowd’, ‘“The object, truth, or the satisfaction of the intellect, and the object, Passion, or the excitement of the heart, are, although attainable, to a certain extent, in poetry, far more readily attainable in prose.” - The Philosophy of Composition’ We have an app about Edgar Allan Poe Quotes in books and poems, about love, death and life Edgar Allan Poe Quotes: Edgar Allan Poe (JanuBoston, USA – October 7, 1849, Baltimore, USA) was an American poet, short story writer, editor, and literary critic. This is a YA coming-of-age love story, but not in that swoony, predictable way. I love the time span of this novel, it stretched ahead of me and wrapped itself around me and I was entirely absorbed into Autumn's world. And this book differs from other YA books as it spans over three years of Autumn's life (told in the present, but it also encapsulated much more than that with memories and flashbacks). I was unprepared for just how good this book is, easily my favourite YA book of the year so far and it now sits on my favourites shelf. I liked the cover, the premise sounded like my kind of thing and I always like the chase of finding a YA book free of preconceived hopes and praise. I ordered it on a whim, not really sure what to expect. I have barely heard of any buzz surrounding Laura Nowlin's debut. It has been a long time since I have fallen so hard for a contemporary YA novel. The night she's about to get the answer is also one of terrible tragedy. But one incident in middle school puts them in separate social worlds come high school, and Autumn has always wondered what if. Throughout their whole childhood, Finny and Autumn were inseperable - they finished each other's sentences, they knew just what to say when the other person was hurting. There's a bubbling delight, almost playfulness, which infuses almost every page. But this book works beautifully, partly, no doubt, because of the care in selecting and editing the transcripts, but mainly because of the sense of excitement that Campbell still displayed in mythology right to the end of his long life (1904-1987). Initially this might seem off-putting oral interviews rarely work so well when put raw onto the page. The format of the book is unusual, being largely transcripts from interviews with Campbell for the 1988 TV documentary film, The Hero's Journey: The World of Joseph Campbell, supplemented by extracts from question and answer sessions from his final series of lectures. From his childhood discovery of stories of Native Americans, it follows his burgeoning fascination with mythology. The Hero's Journey is the story of Campbell's life and life's work. Joseph Campbell was arguably the greatest authority on mythology of this century his The Hero With a Thousand Faces and Masks of God series have had an incalculable effect on readers from students of religion and anthropology to creative artists such as George Lucas, creator of StarWars. “But I would not say a word until I could set aside all I know or believe about nations, war, leaders, the governed and the ungovernable all I suspect about armor and entrails. The Source of Self-Regard: Selected Essays, Speeches, and Meditations And in effecting these changes it produces the perfect capitalist, one who is willing to kill a human being for a product (a pair of sneakers, a jacket, a car) or kill generations for control of products (oil, drugs, fruit, gold).” It changes parenting into panicking-so that we vote against the interests of our own children against their health care, their education, their safety from weapons. It changes neighbors into consumers-so the measure of our value as humans is not our humanity or our compassion or our generosity but what we own. It changes citizens into taxpayers-so individuals become angry at even the notion of the public good. It is recognizable by its determination to convert all public services to private entrepreneurship, all nonprofit organizations to profit-making ones-so that the narrow but protective chasm between governance and business disappears. It is recognizable by its need to purge, by the strategies it uses to purge, and by its terror of truly democratic agendas. “Fascism talks ideology, but it is really just marketing-marketing for power. When Allegiant grossed less than $180 million worldwide, compared to the $300 million Insurgent made the year before, the studios realized they could no longer confidently invest in the YA dystopian movies for a considerable profit at the box office. The second movie only topped the original's total gross by a tiny margin. Prior to the release of The Divergent Series: Allegiant, there were already signs that the general public's interest in the franchise was waning. Unfortunately, the television continuation of The Divergent series did not come to fruition, but why? That would have acted as a pilot for a television series revolving around new storylines and characters that didn't strictly follow the plot lines within the original books. After the financial disappointment of The Divergent Series: Allegiant, the film's executives decided to try wrapping up the series with a TV movie version of The Divergent Series: Ascendant, which was rumored to kill off Shailene Woodley's Tris to continue the story. The future of the franchise was inevitably put into question following the underwhelming performance of The Divergent Series: Allegiant in 2016. However, while Divergent and its sequel The Divergent Series: Insurgent were hits, they did not reach the same level of success as The Hunger Games. Those who don't fit are "divergent." Divergent's unique premise was well-received by critics and at the box office. The Divergent series is set in a futuristic society where people are divided into factions based on their virtues: Abnegation, Amity, Candor, Dauntless, and Erudite. Instead it was a very detailed and meticulously transcribed personal encounter with shamanic culture and rituals. For some reason I expected it to be a story of an inspiring spiritual journey, self discovery and rising consciousness. Rather it was a case of misplaced expectations on my part. I can't quite blame it on the book, to be honest. If you could give The Teachings of Don Juan a new subtitle, what would it be? What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!) The world is a dark and frightening place that's out to get you unless you have a powerful ally or access to magic powers. If you could sum up The Teachings of Don Juan in three words, what would they be? |
